Great Escape: From Gardens to Greenhouses

Take pleasure in a room full of plants; the greenhouses where they grow tend to be quiet.

This week’s Great Escape offers you two peaceful, rejuvenating options – visit a greenhouse and surround yourself with plants at nearby Russell’s Garden Center or at The Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston.

Russell’s is a large garden center for purchasing plants, garden materials and gifts. The center has several greenhouses where plants are thriving. There are sections based on what kind of sunlight and humidity in which the plants grow. Russell's is, in fact, so big it will probably take you a few trips there to learn your way around.

See the variety of succulent plants, desert cacti and tropical plants, and enjoy the solitude that comes from looking for even just one new houseplant. Until April 1, you can take advantage of a sale: 20 percent off all spring wreaths.

Russell’s Garden Center is open daily from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

If you have some more time, then consider taking a trip to The Tower Hill Botanic Garden and see the Orangerie, the outdoor Winter Garden, and the new Limonaia.

The Winter Garden is a large patio with fountain pond that showcases plants that do well in the winter.

The Orangerie is 4,000 square feet of a large display of plants.

The Limonaia is an unusual and striking building: wooden beam structure holding a glass ceiling that has a touch of Italian architecture.

The Tower Hill Botanic Garden is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. from Tuesday to  Sunday and holiday Mondays. It is located at 11 French Dr., Boylston.

Admission: Adults, $10. seniors, $7
