If you drove past Weston Town Green earlier this week, you might have noticed an explosion of carrot noses, stick arms and button eyes.

WHDH reporter Brandon Gunnoe tracked down the reason behind Weston's new snowman population and found it all went back 300 years.

According to Gunnoe's report, the Weston Children's Community Association decided to build 300 snowmen in celebration of the town's 300th anniversary this year.

"My grandparents grew up in Weston, my parents are still here. It's a town people come back to,” a parent, Caroline Balz, told Gunnoe.

WCCA President Michele Schuckel told Patch that the plan for the snowman building adventure came from Weston Recreation Director Douglas MacDougall.

"We were looking for some kind of winter event that we could just do a family thing," Schuckel said, explaining that the plan had been to do a flash mob-sort of event where families just showed up and started building.

Schuckel said they managed to craft 243 snowmen on Tuesday afternoon , with Schuckel's industrious 9-year-old daughter making 100 of those. But the point wasn't really about hitting that magic number of 300.

"The point was to get people outside, connect with each other and have a good time," Schuckel said. "Any event with kids and marshmallows and hot chocolate is a success."
