One wrong move at The Gifted Hand and everything in the store may shatter. This bright, colorful Church Square art store is filled wall to wall with beautifully handcrafted glass structures and other interesting knick-knacks. “We just have a lot of really good stuff,” said store manager Jill Rodday. Whether it’s glass sailboats and fish by artist John Volpacchio or crystal ball-like orbs by Glass Eye Studio in Seattle, each item is more delicate and intricate than the last. The shop sells wooden trinkets as well. The collection of ballpoint, rollerball and fountain style wooden pens via a …
Kimball Farm has all sorts of activities to bring out the kid in everyone. A short drive from Weston, in about 30 minutes the family can be enjoying mini-golf, bumper boats, homemade ice cream, fresh seafood, a 9-hole pitch and putt, a driving range, a batting cage, an arcade, a wild animal tent and a hot air balloon ride that offers an unforgettable view.
Tucked in the middle of a bustling urban area, the Arnold Arboretum offers something for everyone.

One of the oldest exhibit halls at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is filled with maritime curiosities from around the world, while a haunting, curious melody spills into the room from the speakers. PEM curators place contemporary art or music next to the older pieces from their collection. The goal of this is to make unique connections between the past and present by placing two unrelated things in context with each other. The museum began as a place for sea captains to store and share trinkets and curiosities from around the world. Over time, this collection grew to include rare artifacts …
In southeast Concord, Mass., you’ll find a pond with just the slightest bit of history. OK, it has a lot of history associated with it, including perhaps the most famous book ever based on a pond. Walden Pond, once the isolated, tree surrounded centerpiece for Henry David Thoreau’s nature-geared “Walden,” is now a centerpiece for literary lovers, nature lovers and beach lovers alike. Because of its literary legacy, Walden Pond has been designated a National Historic Landmark and, according to the reservation’s website, is considered “the birthplace of conservation.” Today, visitors to the …
Right off Route 117 in Lincoln is Drumlin Farm, a fully operational working farm and wildlife sanctuary operated by Mass Audubon. You can tour the farm, take a walk on the many trails around the wildlife sanctuary or buy fresh vegetables and meat, as well as wool, fleece, maple syrup and more, from the farmstand, which is open whenever the sanctuary is. The farm also offers many educational opportunities, including a preschool and a summer camp for older children. There are plenty of educational opportunities for adults, too: lectures on wildlife, workshops on food and naturalist walks. …

Set quite back from the road, right off Boston Post Road Bypass, is the 35 acres at Linwood Cemetery. It's not the first place that springs to mind when one thinks of ways to relax, but with winding trails, plenty of trees and simply the hushed sounds of nature, the cemetary can be a quiet place of reflection and tranquility.  On a sunny day, walking around, it's hard to hear the sounds of traffic. Instead the chirps and songs of birds permeate the air, while the gravestones sit quietly by in eternal rest. The oldest graves in the cemetery start in 1874 and continue onward.  Hours at the …
Editor's note: Information for this article was taken from Farm Town to Suburb: The History and Architecture of Weston, Massachusetts, 1830-1980, by Weston Historical Society President Pamela Fox. Like many New England towns, Weston's town green started off as a pasture and was later turned into a center for gathering, commerce and official government business. One of the first buildings erected in Weston's town square was the Josiah Smith Tavern, built in the mid-1700s and remains standing today as a historical artifact. Where the town green currently is was a cow pasture, and initially also…
Swimming and ice cream: Two elements for a perfect summer, no matter if you're a kid or an adult. If you live in Weston, you're in luck, because both options are easily accessible for residents. Weston residents can get a badge at the Recreation Department, or pay $5 per visit with proof of residency. Kids under 2 are free. From June 19 to Aug. 12, the pool is open from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. From Aug. 12 to Aug. 24, the pool is open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily…
Tucked away in the northwest corner of Weston is a quiet, unassuming building that is part of a global network tracking changes and movements below the Earth's surface. The Weston Observatory does not, contrary to first impressions, track the stars in the sky.  "Our primary focus today, here at Weston Observatory, is earthquake monitoring, with an emphasis on earthquake monitoring in New England and surrounding areas," said Director John Ebel during a recent visit to the site. The New England area gets about 20 to 30 earthquakes per year, with about three to six of them felt somewhere in New …
