A frequently updated column with Weston sports briefs, with input and photos from coaches, parents and players.Weston star quarterback Jarrett Rowe ran for two long touchdowns, passed for another, and kicked two extra points, as the host Wildcats defeated Bishop Fenwick, 20-0, for their first win of the campaign Friday. Weston improved to 1-1, while Bishop Fenwick fell to 0-2. Rowe rushed for 39 yards on his first tally and followed that with a 49-yard scamper into the end zone to give the 'Cats a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. In the final frame, he connected with standout receiver Richard Webb for a 43-yard TD.
Weston High track standout Abigail Pohl, who will be a junior this fall, finished in second place at the recent Falmouth Road Race Mile. Pohl crossed the line at 5:26.57, overtaking third-place finisher Colleen Sands of Waschusett with 300 meters to go. Madison Granger of Belchertown won the event in a time of 5:22.52. Sands finished in 5:31.05
Rivers School sophomore Declan McCabe has been selected to enter the US Soccer Under-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida starting in the fall. McCabe is one of just 40 chosen players under 15 who will go to prepare for the U17 World Cup in two years. McCabe, a midfielder, is just the third player from Massachusetts to be selected since the program began in 1999. Among the others was Sheanon Williams, who left Rivers after the ninth grade in 2005 to go to Florida. Williams is now the starting right back for the Philadelphia Union in the MLS.
Weston senior tennis star Will Spector rallied to defeat Lexington freshman standout Ben Tso, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, to win the North Sectional tennis title and advance to the state championship on Saturday.
Sophomore star runner Abigail Pohl tops the list of Weston standouts qualifying for the East Division 4 Championship track meet this Friday (note: pole vault competition is tomorrow) at North Reading High. Pohl qualified for four running events this spring. Junior Charlotte Walmsley, meanwhile, is the only member of the Weston girls’ team to qualify for a field event. Walmsley qualified for three events overall. The Weston softball team exploded for nine runs in the first inning en route to a 17-3 victory over archrival host Wayland in Dual County League Small Division action yesterday. Weston improved to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in division play. Every player in the Weston lineup had at least one hit and a run scored. Sophomore Sarah Goldman led the way, going 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Senior Sarah Ober had two hits in three tries with a walk and four runs scored. Weston senior tennis star Will Spector advanced to the boys North Sectional singles final against Lexington freshman standout Ben Tso. Spector won both his quarterfinal and semifinal matches yesterday, defeating Cameron Trosin of St. John’s Prep, 6-2, 6-1, and Arlington’s Matt Lipinski, 6-3, 6-2. Weston’s Rutendo Mutengo gave Tso a battle in the quarterfinals, before succumbing, 6-0-, 2-6, 6-4. Tso then defeated Central Catholic’s Tom Alaimo, 6-2, 6-0. The title round is scheduled to be played Saturday.
From the Weston Athletic Department— Weston's Red Tide opened the 2010-2011 campaign last Friday with the annual DCL Relay Carnival, at Atkinson Pool, in Sudbury. Both teams were in action in this all-swimming event, while the divers continued training in anticipation of the squad's first dual meet, later this week. For the GLOWS, the team was led by Bianca Tocci, who was part of one winning, and two second-place relays. cross-country Information provided by parent Bob Walmsley In their first ever trip to the Nike Regional Qualifiers in Wappinger Falls, N.Y., Weston finished 13th in the highly competitive eight-state meet. The course had a long steep hill in the second mile which accounts for the overall slow 5k times.
