Lily Fishman ○      Whiz Kids' School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Fishman, a senior at Weston High School, was recently commended for reaching the short list of the International Young Person's Short Story Award. ○      Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: Fishman is one of six students waiting to hear if she won first prize, which comes with a cash reward. Weston Public Schools Music Department ○      Whiz Kids' School: Weston Public Schools ○      Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Weston Public Schools' Music Department was recently named by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation as one of 179 Best Communities for Music Education. ○      Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: According to the foundation, "the designation exemplifies a distinction worthy of pride, but also a call to action for local music education advocates to help preserve – and in some cases, save – their current music education programs." This is also the second …
Thomas Peacher ○      Whiz Kids' School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Thomas Peacher, 15, just got back from the Bahamas on a trip with the New England Aquarium, in its second TURTLE (Teen Underwater Research, Training and Learning Expedition) program. The group of teens go scuba-diving, with supervision, to see marine life up close. ○      Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: Peacher was selected from a rigorous application process, and since February, met weekly with the TURTLE group to learn about marine biology and the scuba certification process. Lisa Kojima ○      Whiz Kid's School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Kojima, a WHS senior, won an honorable mention and $100 in an essay contest sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute. And because she won, her sponsoring teacher, Don Benson, received $100 as well. ○      Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: The contest asked students to answer the question, "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?” Kojima chose "perserverance" as her civic value and focused on Carrie Chapman Catt, the founder of the League of Women Voters. Caleb Tulloss ○      Whiz Kid's School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Tulloss, a freshman, qualified to go to the National History Day state competition, to be held at Clark University in Worcester on April 9.  ○      Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Tulloss took second place at the district level for his individual website on the Korean War. WHS Theater Company Whiz Kids' School: Weston High School Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Not only did the theater company write its own play, "The Lie That Binds," it also won in a preliminary round at the Mass Educational Theater Guild Drama Festival at Attleboro High School this past Saturday, March 5. They go on to compete on March 19, when the high school hosts the semi-final round. WHS Girls' Basketball ○      Whiz Kids' School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: The girls' basketball team has won the Dual County League (DCL) title, beating Bedford. In the first round of the winter sports tournament, they beat Wayland and will go on to play against Pentucket Regional High School on Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m. ○      Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: The girls have excelled this year, with a record of 13-7 overall. ○      Whiz Kid's Age: 15 ○      Whiz Kid's School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Grace Huckins spent her 2010 summer studying ninth grade attitudes about physics with WHS science teacher Dr. Boris Korunsky. A paper the two wrote about the study, titled "Physics Thirst? A Survey of Ninth-Grade Physics Students," will appear in the April 2011 issue of academic journal The Physics Teacher. ○      Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Huckins, who was recently a part of the team on "High School Quiz Show," will be starting a Quidditch league in the spring with some friends. WHS Chorus ○      Whiz Kids' School: Weston High School ○      Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: The chorus has been selected to sing at the Boston Celtics game on Sunday, April 3, at the 6 p.m. game and the Boston Red Sox game on Friday, April 29,  at the 7 p.m. game. ○      Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: School officials credit these selections to the students' hard work, talent and the support of the schools and the town.
