60-Second Intervals: The 6Ps and Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

This is a great time to implement the 6Ps into your health, fitness and weight loss goals.

The holidays are here which means lots of parties to attend, including voluminous amounts of foods and drinks that can sabotage your health and fitness goals.

Before the holiday party rush, ask yourself: "What do I want out of my holiday season?"

Perhaps it’s unrealistic to set a goal of losing 10 pounds and getting in the best shape of your life in December, but maybe it’s time to think about breaking even and not undoing the results you achieved this spring.

I know many clients who do not prepare for the holidays and don’t set some boundaries for themselves prior to the season and find themselves looking back on December and saying to themselves: "What have I done?"

The data varies, but for most of the population, people gain five pounds or more over the holidays. A big reason why is we don’t have a gameplan going into the holidays and we are defeated by the alcohol, snacks, finger foods, appetizers and desserts. The foods that are likely the most deleterious -- the sugar and refined, easily-digestible carbohydrates -- are lurking around every corner at the holiday soiree.

Prepare and plan for the holiday parties by making the decisions beforehand: you may not decide to be perfect, but the ‘inevitable’ weight gain over the holidays is not inevitable if you have a plan.
