Bites Nearby: Uncommon Grounds

It began as a pitstop for on-the-go morning coffee and pastry – now it's a full-service diner with breakfast all day and a variety of lunch fare. Check out this cafe in Watertown.

As its name implies,  was originally a drive-in for getting a hot beverage and morning carb. Several years ago, though, it expanded into a diner with full breakfast and lunch menus. The food is fresh and the service fast.

Good fare: It all depends on when you arise. You can choose all day between breakfast dishes, like scrambled-egg specials and waffles, or lunch fare, such as a variety of paninis or a bowl of fresh soup or chowder with a half sandwich.

The Vibe: The atmosphere is classic diner: booths and stools in a snug and bustling atmosphere, the clatter of plates and silverware, and two friendly waitresses always on the move.

Cool factor no. 2: The owner – who used to help at his father's gas station on the same site for 25 years – now works behind his own counter. What's more, his mother is likely to drop in for lunch, so you know everyone has to get treated well.

Cool factor no. 1: The outdoor patio is crowded on sunny weekends. The ample off-street parking probably doesn't hurt business either. The patio's low walls are also removable, so it can be opened to the sun or half-protected.
