Massage Therapist Opens Shop in Weston

Maureen Byrne decided it was time to settle practice into a "home," and Weston seemed the right place.

Maureen Byrne discovered her love of massage therapy via a rather traumatic route.

Her now pre-teen son was born prematurely at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Byrne said the hospital likes to keep parents of preemie babies busy with a variety of classes and seminars. In Byrne's case, one of those classes was infant massage.

When her son made it home from the hospital, Byrne practiced what she'd learned on him and found that he slept "perfectly," and didn't suffer from colic or other common infant maladies.

"He was always pleasant, always happy," said Byrne, sitting now, more than a decade later, in her new Weston Massage Therapy studio at 104 Boston Post Road in Weston.

After that experience with her young son, Byrne was convinced of the power of massage and headed to massage therapy school. While in school, she said, she developed a particular interest in deep tissue massage.

"It's fascinating to me, the idea of fixing people without medication," said Byrne.

After school, she worked some in spas, but ultimately went back to school where she continued to hone her massage skills with an eye toward focused treatment on a particular issue a client is having.

Byrne said she started working with a wide variety of athletes when hotel concierges contacted her as the athletes traveled through town. Ultimately, it was a professional athlete (he's now been traded) who encouraged Byrne to open a studio in Weston.

"He said, 'There's nothing like what you do in that area,'" Byrne recounts.

As far as "what she does," Byrne said if you want hot stones or towels, she can do that, but she's known for her focused approach.

"I'm not really frilly," Byrne said. "I fix people. That's what I do."

When she first meets with new clients, Byrne said she spends time talking with that person about particular "aches and pains," and what specifically brought that person into her studio. Then she just lets her instincts take over.

"I know what you need, and I know what to do," Byrne said. "My massage is mostly instinctual. I love helping people so they don't have to take pain relievers or muscle relaxers."

Byrne has spent most of her massage career going to her clients, but she says she is ready to make Weston her home base.

"I want this to sort of be my baby," Byrne said. "I want to be able to have a set clientele and work with people regularly."

Weston Massage Therapy opened quietly in December in Suite 3 at 104 Boston Post Road, a reddish home converted into office space across from Biogen Idec.
