Patch Picks: 5 Innovative Businesses - Local and Online

Creative products and systems driving innovative businesses.

Pearl's Premium Ultra Low Maintenance Lawn Seed

This lawn seed rarely needs watering, can be mowed as little as never to once a month, and needs no chemicals to be thick and beautiful (good for our pets, families and ponds). Says Wayland resident Jackson Madnick about creating the seed: he spent years developing it with the only two university grass researchers who were not receiving grants from fertilizer companies. Several properties in Wayland and throughout the state already use this seed, and it is picking up steam. The product was recently covered in the New England Business Bulletin as groundbreaking and potentially industry-shaking.

Ecological Engineering Group

Based in Weston, this company has created several systems that make the term "wastewater" seem like a misnomer. Systems such as Ecocyclet and Solar Aquatics use grey, black and brownwater to produce gardens and reusable water. Company systems have been installed in both Weston and as far as Fiji, all under the overarching goal of conserving and properly reusing water.

Siena Farms

Based in Sudbury, Siena Farms is an independent farm that has successfully set up relationships with over a dozen restaurants and bakeries, as well as a few Farmer's Markets, for which to provide produce. This kind of arrangement has gained recent popularity, and many fine restaurants in New England have ties with specific farms - both with the aim of receiving great produce and supporting local agriculture.

Called "neighbor-to-neighbor ," Relay Rides connects car owners with people who need to borrow a vehicle. It is different from Zipcar, a boston-based company, in that car owners are involved and can make some substantial spending cash.  If you know someone in Boston who may be interested in joining, direct them to the Green Roots Festival in Jamaica Plain this Sunday where Relay Rides will have a booth. Originally from San Francisco, Relay Rides is now also in Cambridge and Somerville.
