Patch Picks: Compassion and Creativity In Our Towns

All kinds of non-profits exist in our neck of the woods that benefit our community, our land, communities across the planet and of course, our furry friends. This week's theme for Patch Picks spotlights five great non-profits.

The Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) was founded in 1965 in response to public outcry about the declining state of the Charles River. CRWA has focused its efforts on cleanups, watershed protection efforts and working with town and city officials along the Charles to improve the quality of the water and life in the river. The organization is headquarted at the in Weston.

The Sudbury Valley Trustees conserve land and protect wildlife habitat in the Sudbury, Concord and Assabet River basin, over 20 towns. One of their most beautiful pieces of land is the Memorial Forest, located in Sudbury. Trail map is available on the SVT website.

Every kitty needs a good home and Guardian Angels Cat Rescue, based out of Wayland, does its best to ensure that happens. The cats in this program are housed, uncaged, in foster homes until a loving permanent home becomes available. With cat adoption days weekly at area Especially for Pets locations, the organization is able to place cats with regularity in permanent homes.

Buddy Dog Human Society, well-known throughout the state, cares for and finds permanent homes for stray, homeless and unwanted cats and dogs. They have been in operation since 1961. If you know someone who would like a pet, consider stopping by Buddy Dog or visiting their website to see if any of the animals their may be a good match.

Household Goods Recycling of Massachusetts (HGRN), in Acton, recycles furniture and home accents, working with families and individuals in need of rebuilding their home during difficult times. They help in the range of 4,000 families a year and work with over 300 social service agencies.
