Dan K. Gordon Landscape Architects was recently recognized by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects (BSLA) for their outstanding work on the Earl Major Estate in Newton. The Wellesley firm earned a Merit Award in the Design/Residential and Garden category for their “outstanding quality, craftsmanship, creativity and artistry.”

BSLA’s long-established and highly regarded annual awards program seeks to recognize members’ excellence in diverse practices. Winning projects reflect the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of the cultural and natural environment. Award winners will be celebrated at the Annual BSLA Celebration Gala on May 1.

Gordon served as lead design consultant for all site improvements. His firm provided schematic design, preparation of construction documents and details, project management and landscape construction oversight.

The 1.8 acre estate, originally built in the early 1930s, had fallen into disrepair and the steeply sloped landscape was overgrown. New owners were planning an extensive addition and requested outdoor cooking and dining areas, a new pool and sweeping lawn space for recreation. Gordon’s charge was to make it all flow seamlessly and complement the home’s unique architecture with attention to detail and materials. The project required completely reorganizing the outdoor space with a new entry, extensive regrading and drainage, developing planting plans and designing masonry site features.

“We created a series of clearly defined outdoor spaces that relate to the house while responding to grading of the site. The combination of the clients’ needs and site challenges helped shaped the design plan, in the process creating an attractive and functional landscape with usable garden spaces that respect the neighborhood,” Gordon explained.

The Gordon team works throughout the New England region, creating clean, timeless landscape designs with well-thought out details that enhance their natural and architectural surroundings. The end result is a space that’s welcoming and comfortable, fitting the character of the site and the occupants. Principal Dan Gordon leads a personable and tight-knit team offering a wide range of recognized expertise including design, permitting and environmental regulations.

Gordon’s firm also coordinated design with the larger team, which included Kenneth Vona Construction, Schumacher Companies, Merrimack Design Associates, and Anthony Catlfano Interiors.
