Weekend Happenings: School Vacation Week Edition

The kids, and many adults, are home for the next week. Let us help you make some plans.

With many people consumed this weekend with family, friends, and consuming, we decided instead to put together some vacation-week events to help make being home for the holidays more fun. Events are arranged chronologically to make it easier to organize your week.

Ongoing during vacation week; Children's Discovery Museum and Science Discovery Museum, Acton; cost is $10.50 for children and adults; most vacation week events are included with admission.

In addition to its usual variety of hands-on experiences, during vacation week the Discovery Museums will offer a variety of events that include LEGO building for toddlers, a Kwaanza celebration, FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman activities, and more. Check the website for each day's events.

OPEN GYM

Ongoing during vacation week; Planet Gymnastics, Acton; cost is $10.

If it's time to let the kids run off some energy, Planet Gymnasics will offer open gym hours during vacation week on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday from 12-1 p.m. as well as Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 7:30-8:30 p.m., and Friday, 6-7 p.m.

SKATING AT RIVERS SCHOOL

Tues. Dec. 27 and Thurs. Dec. 29 at 12 p.m., Rivers School, Weston; cost is $5 per person with a $20 family maximum.

The Weston Recreation Department is sponsoring vacation week skating at the Rivers School at 12-1 p.m. on both dates for general skating and 1-2 p.m. for stick time. Helmets are mandatory; for questions or additional information, call the Weston Recreation Department at 781-786-6266.

FAMILY MOVIE: CARS 2

Tues. Dec. 27 at 12 p.m, Goodnow Library, Sudbury; free

Parents and children are invited to bring a pillow and watch the fun family adventure CARS 2. The movie is rated G and is two hours long; the library will provide popcorn.

Weds. Dec. 28 at 10 a.m., Country School, Weston; cost is $5 for WCCA members, $10 for non-members.

The Weston Community Children's Association (WCCA) will host a magic show with the award-winning Bonaparte, a magician who entertains audiences of all ages with his unique blend of magic, comedy, origami, balloon sculpture and more.

PAPER CRAFTS FOR KIDS

Weds. Dec. 28 at 2 p.m., Wayland Public Library; free

Children ages 4-8 are invited to create projects with paper.

LEGO PROGRAM

Weds. Dec. 28 at 2 p.m., Goodnow Library, Sudbury; free.

Children ages 6 and older are invited to Goodnow Library's first LEGO workshop, a drop-in program for which no registration is needed.

FAMILY MOVIE: KUNG FU PANDA 2 

Thurs. Dec. 29 at 11 a.m., Wayland Public Library; free

Families can stop by for a fun film about a martial-arts-loving panda. Refreshments will be served and children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thurs. Dec. 29 at 3 p.m., Goodnow Library, Sudbury; free.

Emerging readers can read to Benson, a certified therapy dog, for 15 minutes, the perfect amount of time for Benson to enjoy a short story or the beginning chapter of a book. Parents must sign up in advance by emailing hwilkinson@minlib.net or calling 978-443-1035.

FAMILY MOVIE: MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS

Fri. Dec. 30 at 2 p.m., Goodnow Library, Sudbury; free

Families are invited to watch this fun Jim Carrey romp, which is rated PG and
1 1/2 hours long. The library will provide popcorn.
