Weston Falls to Sudbury in Fifth Annual LWV Civics Bee

When it comes to history, Sudbury knows best.

The team from Sudbury claimed Sunday's League of Women Voters Civics Bee title, beating out teams from Weston and Wayland for the third year in a row, according to a press release from the League of Women Voters.

The annual competition, now in its fifth year, tests the knowledge of teams comprised of middle school students, high school students and adults when it comes to state and federal government. Because Weston, Sudbury and Wayland are all celebrating or preparing for milestone anniversaries, this year's bee also featured questions about local history.

Weston and Wayland have each won the Civics Bee trophy once, while Sudbury has claimed top honors three times. This year, Weston's score of 609 came in second to Sudbury score of 710. Wayland claimed third place with a score 531.

The Weston team wore T-shirts celebrating their town's 300th anniversary, according to the press release.

The team "delighted the audience" when it said the first thought was "to hold his clothes" when answering the question "What is the official role of the President's Cabinet?"

"Noticing the word Cabinet was capitalized, the team decided it had better say 'to advise the President,'" the press release reads.

The Weston team was comprised of middle school students Jack Daley, Kenz Kallal, Clara Li and Kabir Gupta; high school students Sophie Alphas, Lilia Chang and Alex Keane; and adults Michael Harrity, Ed Heller and Wendy Spector.

"Richard Albert, an assistant professor of constitutional law at Boston College School of Law, served as judge for the fourth year. Jo-Ann Berry, co-chair of the League of Women Voters of the Acton Area, was Bee Master or moderator, and Katty Chace, president of the Weston League, was chair of this year’s Bee committee," the press release reads.

This year's competition was held at the Weston Community Center and rotates among the three towns. The sixth annual LWV Civics Bee will be held in Sudbury in 2014.
