Your Local Hurricane Survival Kit

Ready for this weekend? It sounds as though Irene is going to pack quite a punch, so check out our guide for helpful tips and info.

What

To have ready:

  • Flashlights with working batteries
  • Charged laptops and cell phones, with back-up batteries if possible
  • Candles (in a safe container)
  • Non-perishable foods (soup, crackers, dried fruit/nuts cereal etc.)
  • Bottled water
  • Lighter
  • Make sure prescriptions are filled
  • First Aid kit
  • Battery-powered radio (with extra batteries)
  • Don't forget about the fuzzy ones! Make sure you have enough pet food and water to last a couple days as well as toys, up-to-date dog tags (with contact info), a crate or pet carrier and medicine.

  • will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but closed on Sunday.
  • Weston has not announced a shelter location yet, but if it is needed the city will set something up and you can find more information on Weston Patch.

Why

Should I be prepared?

  • The National Weather Service says Hurricane Irene has the potential to bring 5 to 10 inches of rain, with higher amounts likely on the western side of the storm's track. Major to moderate urban flooding is possible with these rainfall amounts.
  • High winds have been predicted to come along with this storm, with damaging winds likely in Southern New England.
  • As of Friday morning, the National Weather Service reports a 69 percent chance New England will have tropical storm-like weather, and a three- to nine-percent chance it will be hurricane-like weather.
