First Parish Church Open House

First Parish Church in Weston invites the public to an open house from 10 – 3 on Saturday, January 12th.  Come in from the cold after enjoying activities on the town green for Weston 300.  The members of First Parish would like to share the common history of the church and the town.  The original church building built in 1698 was used for town meetings, as well as for worship.  The parish was the community.  All churches in the area were congregational in their organization, and the minister’s salary was raised through taxation.

Historic tours of the church will be offered.  Hot food will be available for purchase.  The church school will hold a bake sale.  Proceeds from the sale will go to the Weston Council on Aging.  There will be a scavenger hunt for the kids.

Some of the points of interest include the Paul Revere Bell and Tiffany Window.  The Mary Jo Rines gallery will feature a time line chronicling the history of the church and the evolution from its role as the theological and governmental center of Weston to a more diverse community.  There will also be an exhibit on significant women in Weston who helped grow both the Town and First Parish.  The parlor features the paintings of ministers who served First Parish throughout the years.  One wrote the hymn “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”.  Another instituted the first transportation system (wagons) for children to the Weston schools.
