12th Annual Martin Luther King Breakfast

Interfaith Citizens Advocating Racial Equality (ICARE) invites you to join us at the 12th Annual Weston Martin Luther King Breakfast on Monday, January 17, 2011.  This uplifting event will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 320 Boston Post Road, in Weston, MA from 8:30 to 10:30 amIt will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy community fellowship and reflect on the principles so faithfully exemplified by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we celebrate his holiday.

This year Dr. Augustus A. White III, M.D., PhD, is the featured speaker. Dr. White, a graduate of Brown University and Stanford Medical School, was the first African-American resident and professor of surgery at Yale.  He is currently Professor of Medical Education and Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and was the first African-American department head at Harvard’s teaching hospitals.   “Gus”, a  long- time Weston resident and one of  the nation’s leading orthopedic surgeons, recently released a memoir on his life entitled: “ Seeing Patients: Unconscious Bias in Health Care”.   The book calls for more diversity in medicine and an end to disparities endured by minorities.  Dr. White calls this disparity “the last frontier of racial prejudice”.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for seniors and children age 12 and under. They cover a full breakfast buffet, the speaker and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Gift to the Weston Public Schools.
