Jimmy Fund Clinic Patient, Age 7 of Weston, Designs Shopping Bag

Sales of Samantha Burns' reusable shopping bag will raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The following information is from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute:

In June, local HomeGoods shoppers will have a special chance to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute by purchasing a reusable shopping bag styled with the artwork of 7-year-old Jimmy Fund Clinic patient Samantha Burns, of Weston.

During a fall appointment at Dana-Farber's Jimmy Fund Clinic, Samantha, who was diagnosed in August with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, began coloring a picture of a butterfly she likes to often sketch into her drawings. That design – what Samantha's mom, Catherine, calls her “signature butterfly” – will be featured on a reusable shopping bag available at HomeGoods stores from June 7 to 30 for $.99. HomeGoods will contribute $.50 for each bag purchased to the Jimmy Fund.

Samantha’s shopping bag is part of the 11th annual HomeGoods “Helps Families Fight Cancer” which supports pediatric and adult cancer care and research at Dana-Farber. More than 245 HomeGoods stores nationwide will be participating in the campaign, in which shoppers can make a $1, $5, or $10 contribution at the register with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund.

Samantha, a budding artist and second-grader at the is excited to see her butterfly appear on a HomeGoods reusable shopping bag. A strong, bright young girl, Samantha fought her way through a life-threatening infection in December, and defied the odds by being where she is today. She is expected to be in treatment at the Jimmy Fund Clinic through August 2013, and wants to one day become a nurse or doctor to help others.
