Time to Vote

After we have our town elections on Saturday, May 11, we'll start our town meeting on Monday, May 13. So please get out and vote, vote, vote!

I just hung up on my friend Bill Sandalls . . . well, on his second robo call.  Thanks, Bill, for reminding the voters that we can vote by absentee ballot at the Town Hall, up until noon on Friday, May 10.  Then the polls are open all day on Saturday, May 11.

Sam and I voted by absentee ballot a couple of weeks ago.  We noticed that a vacant position on the Board of Assessors had still not been filled.  Noone had come forward at the Town Caucus, although 50 signatures of registered Weston voters could have got a candidate's name on the ballot.  Then I met real estate agent Susie Shortsleeve at the LWV's Candidates' Night and had the most wonderful conversation with her.  She's running a sticker campaign for an empty seat and she was passing out stickers that night.  Of course if you don't have a sticker, you can just write in "Susie Shortsleeve" in the vacant space which says "to fill a vacancy" for Assessor.

Although we were unfortunately unable to vote for Susie, Sam and I did vote for Bill Sandalls for Selectman, Harvey Boshart for Moderator, Glenn Cardozo for Planning Board and me for Recreation Commission.  I met my opponent in this race for the first time at Candidates' Night and, as I've already told her, it's a good thing I voted by absentee ballot because I might very well have been tempted to vote for her myself.  Suffice it to say that whoever wins these contested races, Weston will survive and thrive, provided the voters remain involved with their town government.

Soon the election will be over and Town Meeting will begin.  As selectman Doug Gillespie wrote recently "We are all in this together."  Some of the issues are contentious and the debate is sure to get heated.  Let us respect our differences and each other.  Let us hear each other out and stick to the merits of the argument we are making.  Personal attacks, including speculation about the motives of our opponents, are in violation of both Robert's Rules of Procedure and the democratic spirit of this unique New England form of government.

See you at Town Meeting!
