School Lunches and Nutrition

Two important events are coming up in March that will shed some light on the new Massachusetts Farm to School Initiative. Come and see firsthand what the school lunch program is all about!!

A healthy diet and good nutrition is paramount in helping children succeed in school. Weston Public Schools are at the forefront of ensuring our children not only get nutritious lunches at school, but also get the education to support a healthy lifestyle. Teaching children about vegetables is now becoming a part of the curriculum and trips to continue to show our children where their food comes from. Good eating habits start at a very young age. I am excited to see that Weston has embraced the Massachusetts "Farm to School" initiative and support from parents is ever important to insure the program's success.

If you would like to understand the overall program and hear what is happening at other schools in the state, please attend the 2nd Annual Massachusetts Farm to School Convention being held on Thursday, March 15 all day at Old Sturbridge Village. Please visit the farm to school initiative website to learn more.

If you would like to learn about the advances being made in the Weston Public Schools' food services, please attend a symposium scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 from 7 to 9 pm. at the Community Room. Join parents, community members, teachers, and members of the food services staff in viewing the short film "Nourish," followed by a discussion of the importance of growing, purchasing and eating local foods, learning healthy eating habits at school and home, and understanding the story behind the food that you and your family eat. Come share your thoughts, and hear how others feed their families and how the schools feed our children.

Teaching our children about healthy eating and feeding them nourishing food at home is just as important as making sure they do their homework, read books, and stay active. Remember, food is the fuel for the brain as well as the body!
