The Heart of Family Caregiving

Come find out what the Council on Aging can do for you in regards to taking care of aging parents, spouses, or grandchildren. Hear the inspiring stories of your neighbors ...

About 5 years ago, as president of the PTO, I sat on the Intergenerational Committee at Weston's Council on Aging. A seemingly routine obligation became one of the best experiences of my life.

Who knew that this dynamic organization exists right in our own backyard!

That first Intergenerational Committee experience led me to join the Board of the C.O.A. and consequently the Caregivers Group. As a group, we were meeting with various members of the community to get an idea of services that might be helpful for those taking care of loved ones. Little did I know that this would directly affect me.

For the past three years, I have been helping take care of my ailing mother who happens to live in Honolulu, Hawaii. Long distance caretaking is very common these days and addressed by this group. My mother passed away this December.  It is heartbreaking, but I am able to get support from my friends at the Council on Aging. I couldn't do it without them.

Next Tuesday, April 9, from 4:30 p.m.-6 p.m., there will be a symposium held at the Weston Community Center touching on the topic of caregiving. Caring for aging parents, caring for spouses, and caring for grandchildren will all be discussed. Come and see what resources are available in our area for helping with caregiving. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised!
