Coyotes Still Active in Weston, Say Police

Sightings not always cause for concern, but residents are encouraged to continue taking precautions.

The Weston Police Department has been receiving calls about coyote activity to an extent that would indicate the animals’ presence remains increased in Weston.

Following a in November that said “based on the number of sightings being reported, it appears as though their numbers and activity levels are increasing,” Weston dispatcher Derek Millen said he’s received up to four or five calls a week from concerned residents who’ve spotted coyotes.

And according to the , police took a call earlier this week from a resident whose dog was bitten by a coyote.

“(Coyotes) are definitely showing their face more in town,” Millen said, a situation likely due to area construction "pushing them out of their natural dens.”

But while police understand citizens’ concern, they said a sighting in and of itself shouldn’t necessarily set people’s nerves on edge.

“It depends on the circumstances,” said Weston Det. Bill Carlo. “Just seeing a coyote in daylight doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem” or merit a call to authorities.

According to Carlo, indicators that would compel a visit by Weston Animal Control include an animal with a mangy coat, or one who walks in circles or with one ear lower to the ground than the other.

The town release encourages residents who spot coyotes to challenge them by voice or loud whistle, or to throw something at them from afar, as well as to take extra precautions with small dogs and cats, points reiterated by the police.

“Always keep your distance and never approach a coyote if you see one,” Carlo said.
