UPDATE: 18-Year-Old Man Killed in Rte. 128 Pedestrian Accident

Drivers experienced significant delays on Route 128 north and south after a pedestrian was struck and killed in Newton this morning.

[Update1:10 p.m.] State police say the victim was an 18-year-old man, who they believe was trying to cross the street. Next-of-kin is being notified.

State Police believe the victim was struck by two vehicles.

"... he was struck by a motor vehicle on the northbound side of the highway, thrown across the median into the southbound side, and struck again on that side of the highway. He was determined to be deceased at the scene," according to an update from police.

[Original Article] More than three hours after a pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 128 in Newton, traffic is just now getting back to normal in the north and southbound lanes of the highway.

Route 128 south appears to be moving again between Burlington (Route 3) and Newton, according to Google Maps traffic. The northbound side has moderate to heavy traffic through Needham to the Mass Pike.

The MassDOT Twitter account posted an update at 9:50 a.m. stating that the scene has cleared and all Route 128 lanes are open. However, there will be residual traffic delays. 

According to a State Police statement, the pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 128 this morning near the Newton rest area, between Route 16 and Grove Street.

The victim was in the highway's median strip, State Police said, and may have been struck while trying to cross the highway around 6:30 a.m.

The victim has not been identified at this time.
