Weston Police Warn Residents of Scam

Suspects allegedly steal valuables from homes.

Weston Police are warning residents of a scam that has the suspects stealing from homes.

Citing similar activity in Belmont, Arlington and Watertown, Weston Police are warning residents to be watchful of a scam where the suspect, posing as a legitimate worker, says he needs to do some sort o work on a residents’ property. The suspects lures the homeowner outside of the homes and unseen suspects ransack the home looking valuables to steal. Similar activity has been reported in Waltham.

“This scam is perpetrated by individuals posing as legitimate workers who approach elderly homeowners at their residences with the intent of gaining entry under a seemingly legitimate ruse,” said Weston Police Lt. Daniel McGuire. “As always, we encourage people to call whenever they feel something isn’t right or have questions."

The suspects often claim to be from a water department, electric company or cable television company, according to McGuire. They also often claim to be roofers, pavers, city inspectors, tree trimmers or Social Security Administration agents. After the suspects enter them home, they often distract the homeowner by turning off a light, knocking on water pipes or by saying they neeed to inspect damage outside of the house. During that time, other suspects enter the house to steal valuables.
