It's Still Legal in Mass. for Employers to Demand Your Facebook Password

State lawmakers will consider a bill to would protect workers from giving up their social media passwords.

State lawmakers will consider legislation that would prohibit employers from requiring workers or job seekers to give up their social media user name and password information.

State Sen. Cynthia S. Creem, D-Newton, filed a bill that would provide protections for workers when it comes to their social media accounts.

"Employers ... shouldn’t demand applicants turn over social media passwords as a condition of acceptance," Creem has said.

Maryland in 2012 was the first state to pass such legislation after a state employee said he was required to give up his Facebook password, according to USA Today.

Since then, at least 28 states have considered similar anti-snooping legislation.

The Associated Press reported the Massachusetts Senate will soon consider Creem's bill.

Unfortunately employers are conservative and risk-adverse corporate employers. They want to ensure candidates is not a risk. Job seekers can use RepNup to detect problems in their social media profile and clean them before an employer view them.

That's a point, but hiring human beings is always a risk. All this "snooping" doesn't take the place of good, ol' fashioned experience and judgment. Just think--a seemingly short time ago, and for centuries, employers had to employ people without knowing about or having access to private communications! Gee, how did they ever manage? How many times have we heard of a "model employee" being found guilty of embezzling, or corporate espionage? It's naive to think that seeing a Facebook page will reveal what's important or what might happen, which is far from predictable. That being said, I put NOTHING about employment or anything potentially embarrassing on my FB page; I just keep all that to myself and share by non-electronic means!

If I were in an interview and they asked for my facebook password I would polity say no and leave.
