Letter: It's Time for 'Excellent New Leadership'

Isabella Jancourtz lays out why she's voting for Sandalls, Boshart, Cardozo and herself at Weston's 2013 Annual Town Election.

If you'd like to see some excellent new leadership in town, then please join me Saturday, May 11 at the town election in voting for Bill Sandalls for selectman, Harvey Boshart for moderator, Glenn Cardozo for Planning Board and me for Recreation Commission.

Weston could use a selectman with both common sense and financial expertise, who is willing and able to tackle the challenges of the day.  Bill Sandalls has served as a member of the Finance Committee and of the School Committee, as well as the recently disbanded Town Meeting Advisory Committee.  He knows how to manage the budget, including how to borrow money sensibly when necessary. With Bill on the Board of Selectmen, the voters will be kept informed and included in the decision making process before being asked to make a final decision at town meeting.

Harvey Boshart is my choice for moderator because he is eminently qualified and has the necessary courteous and respectful temperament to run our town meetings effectively. He too has served on the Finance Committee and he is presently a member of the Police Station Study Committee. Harvey's background in finance and his service to the town in this area will ensure that the appointments he will make to the Finance Committee as moderator will be good choices for the town.

I like newcomer Glenn Cardozo for Planning Board because he has a very strong background in engineering and in planning, gave an articulate and appealing account of himself at the town caucus, and is apparently eager to take on the hard work of approving the plans and overseeing the work on the many building projects in town.

One thing these three gentlemen have in common is that they are all down to earth, straight talking U.S. veterans. Not only do they each have the clear ability and desire to do the job they are running for, their election will bring much-needed and most refreshing change to our local town government.

Lastly, I'll be voting for myself for a seat on the Recreation Commission. I'd like to see this board function a lot better than it has been, with consecutive meetings cancelled for lack of a quorum and little information provided to or sought from the public. If elected, I will show up for meetings, make sure that timely and informative agenda and minutes are posted on the town website and provide opportunities for the voters to give feedback on current programs as well as suggestions for change.

Although we have many excellent programs, I would like to see more community use of our Community Center and more town-wide events, such as the recent Weston 300 party at the Town Hall.  I would also like to find a way to keep our wonderful Town Pool open on Labor Day weekend and beyond.  I have been a writer, a family lawyer and a community activist with many interests, most recently having served on the Town Meeting Advisory Committee.
