Rep. Alice Peisch Appointed To Lead Joint State Education Committee

Peisch brings two decades of experience to the new role.

Rep. Alice H. Peisch (D-Wellesley) was named the house chair of the Joint Committee on Education Friday, Jan. 28. The committee is responsible for all legislation related to state education issues through 12th grade, according to Peisch.

Peisch’s aide Matthew Kitsos released a statement announcing the appointment today.

While it’s too early to talk about specific goals, Peisch told Wellesley Patch she would spend the next six weeks bringing herself up to speed on the issues as they effect the entire state, which involves reviewing each municipality’s school-based legislation in the wake of the approval of a new state education reform bill earlier this month.

“What are my colleagues focusing on?” said Peisch. “That will inform my view.”

Peisch will attend a MassINC sponsored summit Friday in Worcester on education in Massachusetts’s gateway cities, a group of 24 cities whose average educational attainment rate is below the state average, according to Massachusetts General Law.

Peisch, who was elected to a fifth term as state representative of the 14th Norfolk District last November, served on the Wellesley School Committee from 1993 to 1999, and has been a participating member of the Wellesley Education Foundation in some capacity since 1999.
