So, About That Route 20 Interchange...

By Ryan Grannan-Doll

You may have noticed some drastic changes to the Route 20 interchange at Exit 26 leading into Weston and Waltham.

Patch and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation have received several complaints from motorists saying the changes are dangerous. Among the changes -- a new median was built dividing the intersection where drivers go west for Weston or east for Waltham, according to the DOT.

However, in a statement, the DOT said it has no plans to make any changes to the interchange.

"The recent modifications to the Rte. 20 interchange were made as part of the mitigation for the new development at the former Polaroid site in Waltham. The purpose of these changes is to improve flow of traffic at locations where future increases in volumes are anticipated," the DOT said. "That new median was put in place to help properly channel traffic through this area as part of the modifications to the Rte 20 interchange."

"We have been contacted by some citizens expressing their concerns over some of the changes.  This is not uncommon whenever new traffic patterns are established, and there is generally an initial adjustment period for drivers to become acclimated to changes such as this," the DOT said.

"At this time, there are no plans to make substantial modifications to the new layout, however we are  continuously monitoring this location for possible revisions to signage and  pavement markings,  as additional measures to advise drivers of the new configuration  and to help make drivers aware until the area becomes familiar," the DOT said.
