Spector, Sandalls Pleased With Town Election Turnout

Spector was re-elected as moderator in the May 5 town election.

After learning last night that she’d been re-elected, Moderator Wendy Spector told Weston Patch this morning she learned a lot from the process, and was pleased to see so many voters out at the polls. Spector edged challenger Bill Sandalls, 872 votes to 703.

“I think it was great for the town to have a contested race,” she said. “The turnout reflected a level of interest in the democratic process that hadn’t been seen in a little while."

A total of 1,620 Weston voters cast ballots in yesterday’s annual town election.

Sandalls also told Weston Patch it was gratifying to see yesterday’s turnout be so high.

“Still, it was a small percentage of voters in town," he said. "There is a ways to go before we have the kind of participation in elections and Town Meeting that we need.”

Sandalls said he was disappointed that he wasn’t elected moderator, however the voters had spoken. He said it’s too soon to know whether he’ll contemplate running again in the future.

“You have to respect the judgement of the voters,” he said. “I could like to congratulate Wendy Spector on her victory yesterday.”

Spector said she is glad the election focused mostly on the issues.

“It was an opportunity for people to learn about the position (of moderator) and for people to feel excited to be a part of the decision.”

She said she hopes the high turnout will continue into Town Meeting, which starts Monday, May 7.

“I think it would be great to have a strong turnout,” she said. “The warrant has many issues that are of public interest.”
