U.S. History Unveiled in Weston

Weston played host to an unveiling on Friday that will go down in the annals of U.S. history.

Dozens gathered Friday at the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History for a First Day of Issue Ceremony for four new stamps.

The set of "A Flag for All Seasons" stamps features four colorful stamps depicting the American flag from below against a backdrop of trees reflecting each of the four seasons. The autumn flag sits against golden leaves, the winter flag against bare branches, the spring flag against the bright green of new growth and the summer flag against the deep green leaves of mid-summer.

Boston Postmaster James Holland spoke during the ceremonial unveiling of the new flags, as did Spellman President Nancy Clark and museum curator George Norton.

Holland thanked the Spellman Museum for hosting the unveiling, saying it was a "special place" and just the right venue for the unveiling.

"The Postal Service is proud of it's role portraying the American experience to a worldwide audience through the issuance of stamps," Holland said, going on to explain that the U.S Postal service yearly receives thousands of proposals for new stamps, but only considers designs of "widespread national appeal and significance."

The "A Flag for All Seasons" stamps were designed by artist Laura Stutzman, who used her photographs of flags for reference, and art director Phil Jordan.

"The Postal Service does more than provide mail service," Holland continued. "The real power of the Postal Service is that we connect people."

Following the unveiling of the stamps, the third grade chorus from the Country School performed a medley of patriotic songs on the steps of the museum.
