Students Volunteer at Special Olympics Event at Weston High School (PHOTOS)

Class of 2014 student volunteers helped host the Special Olympics basketball tournament last weekend.

Some 75 Weston High School students spent their Sunday morning volunteering at the Special Olympics qualifying basketball tournament at Weston High School for a community service project set out by the class of 2014 that's become a longstanding tradition in town.

Weston has hosted this event since the early 2000s, with students volunteering as team hosts, guiding the team from place to place, and getting to know the players during down time. Other students helped with food service, registration, time keeping and referee duties.

Twenty-seven teams competed in the tournament with a total of approximately 400 athletes and coaches, used to assess teams to determine their their level of skill and all move on to the next level of the tournament. The athletes are paired with teams of similar skill level to ensure competitive matches.
