Common Core 'Completely Botched,' Union Leader Says

The president of the National Education Association said educators and policymakers need to work together to make the standards work locally.

The president of the country's largest teachers union, the National Education Association, said in a letter last week that the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) has been "completely botched" in many states.

President Dennis Van Roekel said the NEA doesn't plan to abandon support for the standards but instead seek a "course correction."

Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have voluntarily adopted the standards, which intend to streamline state curricula through a set of universal specifications so that kids all over the country will be learning the same things.

In the letter, Van Roekel said 70 percent of teachers believe the implementation is going poorly in their schools, and two-thirds said they haven't been asked about implementing them in their classrooms.

"Imagine that: The very people expected to deliver universal access to high quality standards with high quality instruction have not had the opportunity to share their expertise and advice about how to make CCSS implementation work for all students, educators, and parents," he said in the letter.

Parents across the country have blasted the standards, saying the teachers—not standardized curriculum and benchmarks—know how to best serve local students.

Van Roekel laid out a seven-point plan to improve implementation of the Common Core, with the first step calling for policymakers to work with educators and gather feedback. You can read his entire letter on the NEA blog

DynoMutt March 02, 2014 at 10:56 PM
Mr. Hunt, just curious. You think the 3/5ths was done to diminish the black man saying he only counts for 3/5ths of a human? You sir need to seek higher ed...
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 01:23 AM
Yeah, um, it's little more complicated than that, Giggles. … In 1787, the South wanted full population credit per slave. North said, No: A slave doesn’t vote and the South shouldn’t get inflated voting weight in the House and in the Electoral College. The result was 3/5. Southern-tilted ramifications were felt all the way into the ‘60s The NINETEEN-sixties. … The biggest blunder of the convention. Powerful North should’ve walked away from the table. Let the South go it alone and get eaten alive from the inside out.
Iron Mike March 03, 2014 at 07:23 AM
You see Dyno, Mister Hunt learned his Constitution by watching the TV show 'West Wing', - where this version of the story was told. And as with most liberals, - he's dealing with half the story – the half that 'feels good'.
Silence DoBad March 03, 2014 at 07:56 AM
Mr. Hunt your welcome. Now doesn't it feel good to learn. And by the way you can thank a conservative for the Emancipation Proclamation. If Al Gore and Robert Bird and his DixieCrat Jim Crowe followers had their way, Blacks would still be in chains, again you can thank the conservatives not the liberals.
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 08:37 AM
OHHHH SNAP!!! I’ve just skimmed your little Patch blog, Dinomut, which reads like a high school Young Patriots Club newspaper column. … When I told you to go read a history book, I wasn’t thinking, literally, your 11th-grade U.S. history textbook. … A 16-year-old white boy from Lexington, Mass., accusing, I’m assuming this current White House, of setting up “welfare slave camps.” … I haven’t seen such hard-hitting commentary since Jonah Goldberg declared Woodrow Wilson and FDR “fascists.” Good work, Junior! … (Next time warn the grownups you’re still a kid. We’ll go easy on you. … But some advice: You’ve got your whole life ahead of you, son. Don’t waste it with the Teabaggers. And stay away from the hard stuff, like Alex Jones’ Infowars. That shit’s like heroin. Will wreck you for life.)
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 08:38 AM
Grampa Iron Mike, Dinoboy has no idea what you're talking about. The year West Wing made its debut, he was like ... 2.
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 08:40 AM
Lincoln was a conservative? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You better look down before you step out of the house this morning, mister. I think you put your pants on backwards.
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 08:48 AM
Grampa Iron Mike. If you knew half as much about the Civil War as you do about useless WWI, you still would've been everyone's least favorite history teacher and JV football coach. But you would've been spewing out information the kids could still apply in today's world. ... (Unless you're like that guy who thought the Radical Republicans were the conservatives ...)
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 08:53 AM
Next thing you're gonna tell me, Silence DoBad, is that Martin Luther King Jr., a registered Rebublican, was also a conservative!!! ... Holy crap -- you, Grampa, and Dinoboy are walking, talking advertisements for why we need to make public education a national priority. You guys are IDIOTS.
Silence DoBad March 03, 2014 at 08:54 AM
Michael where is all that anger coming from. You must must calm your angry mind before you can truly begin to learn. I realize facts are a tough thing to debate against, especially when you do not know them. But that is OK education never stops Michael keep on picking up books and keep trying to learn, it will happen. If you let it.
DynoMutt March 03, 2014 at 09:01 AM
Mr. Hunt, I am sorry did you say Lincoln was not a conservative. This is getting embarrassing for you, you should quit while you are behind. Funny how you did not comment on the fact that Al Gore and the Democrats were the ones that wanted to keep blacks in chains. Oh wait they are keeping blacks and all other cultures on the low end of the economic spectrum in chains, WELFARE. Nice party you have there slugger.
DynoMutt March 03, 2014 at 09:18 AM
By the way Mr. Hunt, MLK Jr. espoused hard work and responsibility/accountability and stable families for blacks in the US. Everything that the democrats purposefully do not believe in. So yes he would be sickened by how the Democrat Party is enslaving the blacks in america and keeping them bare foot and dependent. Just ask his daughter. A mind is a terrible thing to waste Mr. Hunt, I would follow the advice of picking up a book and trying to learn a little before condemning another.
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 09:21 AM
Yes, yes, Dinoboy. How heavy your young heart must be as a result of all the social injustices going on in the United States today! Welfare is slavery! Abortion is slavery! Affirmative Action is slavery! Gun control is slavery! Illegal immigration is slavery! … Your next little high school Patch post is going to be titled Slavery: The New Slavery! … Heck, you remind me of a young Harriet Tubman!

Janine, The show is called What's Happening and it is from Beverly, MA.
Iron Mike March 03, 2014 at 09:23 AM
It appears that Mister Hunt may have taken the pilot version of “Common Core History for Liberals”.... He probably thinks that slavery began in the American South...and that Republicans started the Civil War....
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 09:26 AM
>>>This “new slavery” has even become wildly popular and sought after by the lower tiers of society. To be enslaved in this manner has picked up incredible momentum and popularity over the last five years and shows no signs of slowing down, thanks to incredible marketing and Billions of dollars spent to glorify its benefits. … This new brand of slavery strips the very essence of human endeavor, natural curiosity and self improvement. This Slavery is just as insidious and vile a form of slavery as blah blah blah blah. The New Slavery is one that crushes the spirit blah blah blah … This new form of slavery is being administered and marketed to all walks of life blah blah blah … This slavery enourages one to curl up into the fetal position blah blah blah.”<<<
Michael Hunt March 03, 2014 at 09:26 AM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA … Wildly popular “new slavery”!!! Good lord, Kunta Kinte! What could it be?!?!? Twerking? Dubstep? Irony?

Call for the check, fellas. You boys are done.
Iron Mike March 03, 2014 at 09:27 AM
It would take a particular kind of low-life to make a mocking reference to Harriet Tubman.
DynoMutt March 03, 2014 at 09:33 AM
Mr. Hunt all you have left is insults and your depressing existence. Time to pick up a book. It will be the first of the month again and the checks will come rolling in from the state.
Silence DoBad March 03, 2014 at 09:40 AM
I feel sad for you Mr. Hunt. I realize all that matters to you is Welfare rights and Gay marriage, so you can have them if that is what you choose Mr. Hunt, I think we will keep trying to push responsibility and working hard to better oneself and society. Enjoy the "easy life". and you are welcome.

COMMON CORE should die. Local standards - local control. IT is a politically left-wing and educationally challenged mess that is more about control than learning. We need inquisitive minds who do more than report on their parents. We need the kids to report instead on teachers who date kids, pervert them, and fail to teach them anything of lasting value.
John Teets April 22, 2014 at 01:14 PM
DynoMutt said - "By the way Mr. Hunt, MLK Jr. espoused hard work and responsibility/accountability and stable families for blacks in the US." Unfortunately, Mr. King (he plagiarized his doctoral thesis) was a serial adulterer just like many young men now - so stable families? Hardly. I agree he said some good things, but a man is better evaluated based upon what he DOES, not based upon what he SAYS. His life spoke so loudly it reallt is hard to take anything he said as authentic. I mean, he even stole the "Dream" speech.

We are going to be doing more shows on Common Core soon. For information on CC, look on the Pioneer Institute website. It is very informative and will give you reasons to fight against CC and PARCC testing.
