Weston Duels With Woburn in ‘Quiz Show’

WHS students went up against Woburn Memorial High School in WGBH's "High School Quiz Show" Sunday morning.

Weston High School went head-to-head with Woburn Memorial High School early Sunday morning at the WGBH studios in Brighton for the second season of “High School Quiz Show,” a game show featuring fast-paced trivia for high school students.

Wildcats team members Grace Huckins, Matthew Chernick, Jonathan Birjiniuk and Mir Bokhari, along with alternates Dan Park and Brendan Eappen, have been studying and practicing for the competition since October and said they were ready to take on whatever Woburn could throw at them.

“Whatever happens, I think we’re going to have a lot of fun,” said Huckins.

Coaches Ted Garland and Alison Langsdorf, who performed in a similar high school quiz bowl herself, said they were looking forward to seeing what their students could do with the hours of practicing and studying for the competition.

“The students have a tremendous store of knowledge,” said Langsdorf.

Supporters from Weston were in the studio audience, wearing Wildcats t-shirts and holding up signs cheering the team on.

Hosted by KISS 108 radio personality Billy Costa, “Quiz Show” begins airing Feb. 13, with Natick versus Acton-Boxborough. The show features schools in eastern Massachusetts.

Winners move on to quarter and semifinal rounds, culminating in a final round that will select a team to go against the winner of a western Massachusetts counterpart, “As Schools Match Wits,” a co-production of WGBY and Westfield State University.

The questions in the show run the gamut from history to literature to pop culture, and feature four rounds: a lightning round, a head-to-head round, a category round and a final lightning round.

Weston qualified for the show in WGBH’s “Super Sunday” in October, where 70 teams each took an identical oral quiz. The list of 70 was then whittled down to 16 teams.

Results of Sunday’s taping are embargoed until the show airs on Sunday, March 13, at 7 p.m. on WGBH 2. If Weston beats Woburn, they will go up ahead the winner of Shepherd Hill versus Hamilton-Wenham.
