Organizers for the 2014 Boston Marathon announced Thursday the field for the 118th race next April will swell to 36,000 runners, the second-largest in race history, according to an Associated Press report on BostonHerald.com.

The Boston Athletic Association said the extra 9,000 runners will be accepted in part to accommodate the 5,624 runners invited back who could not finish the race this year due to the bombings at the finish line on Boylston Street that killed three people and injured hundreds more.

The AP reported registration for the race will begin Sept. 9. More information is available here on the B.A.A. website.
