Q and A with Weston Boys Hockey Goalie Sam Goodman
Sam Goodman took a moment after Weston's 3-2 victory over Newton South to answer questions from Patch.
Patch: You’re a senior, and this will be your last season playing for Weston. How does that feel?
Goodman: It’s been four good years with the team. I’m a captain this year. We obviously have a new coach to try to turn things around, play cleaner hockey. And the goal each game is obviously to win.
Patch: Being a captain, what does that entail? What type of leadership do you have to bring to the table?
Goodman: As a goalie, it is a little bit different than the other captains who actually speak to the refs because I’m actually not allowed to speak to the refs as a goalie. From being in the net, you get a different perspective of the ice in front of you, so I can give the coaches input from what I’ve seen because I’m out there all the time. Obviously, the other captains will have a different view.
Patch: What do you tell the younger players? How do you lead them?
Goodman: I have two freshman goalies. They’re going to be obviously in my place sophomore year. I know what they’re going through because when I was a freshman, there was a senior captain goalie who I really looked up to. I kind of realize that they follow whatever I do. I help them practice and that type of thing.
Patch: What type of training do you put in leading up to the season?
Goodman: I actually played for a U-19 team, a fall team, the Minuteman Flames out of Marlborough, the sports complex out there. Definitely some talented kids, like a couple of kids from that team who are actually on Division 1 colleges. A lot of talent. It was definitely a challenge for me. I played a lot, so that obviously helped me on my game.
Patch: What are your goals this season?
Goodman: Try to win every game. Ultimately, the goal is to go to the finals and states and obviously win. But we take it one step at a time.
