Weston Red Tide Rolls Past Opponents

Girls' and boys' high school swim teams continue to dominate; tomorrow's meet against DCL foe Wayland will benefit Toys for Tots.

Editor's note: Submitted by the Weston Athletic Department.

The Weston Red Tide continued to roll through the early part of their schedule last week. The girls took a pair of victories over DCL opponent Bedford on Tuesday, and non-league foe Ashland on Friday. The boys cruised past Bedford as well, then traveled to Boston Latin on Friday, but the host team did not show and the meet will have to be rescheduled.

In Tuesday’s contest against Bedford, the Weston girls got wins from seniors Maddie Pierce (200 IM and 100 free), Bianca Tocci (50 free and 100 fly), and freshman standout Julimar Avila (100 free). Junior Camille Casey also took gold in the one-meter diving for the second consecutive meet. Solid improvement was also shown by senior Steph Bryson (a two-second drop in the 50 free), freshman Izzie Alesse (two-second improvement in breaststroke), and Simran Gupta (the largest drop of the day; eight seconds in the 100 free.)

Friday’s 92-83 victory over Ashland was highlighted by a freshman-record performance in the 200 free by Avila. The plucky rookie raced her way to a 1:56.34 clocking in the event, erasing the previous mark of 1:57.77, set by Eliza Butts in 2003. It was just the second time an individual record of Butts has been broken. (Butts graduated with 21 of 24 individual swimming records at Weston in 2006.)

Juniors Katie Kim (sprint free) and Lydia Moore (distance free), senior Eliza Robson (diving), and sophomore Anna Neufeld (distance free) posted strong swims for Weston. First-year junior Claire Reeves had the biggest time improvement of the day, dropping seven seconds in the 100 free.

For the boys, the Tuesday win over Bedford was spearheaded by wins from seniors Tommy Fitzgerald and Tyler Lewtan, juniors Ryan Burrow, Jamie Packs, and Tommy Peacher, sophomore Dan Spellman, and freshman Alan Blaesser. Strong showings were also turned in by junior Alden Harwood, sophomores Stephen Babcock and Caleb Tulloss, and freshmen Nick Revers and Dan Rigobon. Junior Drew Alcaide had the biggest time drop of the meet with a four-second improvement in the 100 back.

Due to transportation difficulties, Boston Latin was unable to cross town to the Murphy School for their meet last Friday with the Weston boys. With the pool open and officials on hand, Weston did not waste the opportunity to race and ran a series of time trials with their 50-man squad. Alexis Mundo, Mitch Revers, Colin Larocque, Colin Luzzi, Marcus Luzzi, Will Bertelson, and Jean Khaksari took full advantage of the venue by posting best times. Sophomore Jason Bui had perhaps his best day as a member of the Tide with a 15-second improvement in the 500 free.

Head Coach Claude Valle was pleased with his teams’ performances.

“Our girls have looked great since day one and continue to roll. Julimar’s freshman record was also a nice, early holiday present,” said Valle. “Our guys are turning a corner right now and I’m really pleased with the way they attacked their races last Friday when we didn’t even have an opponent.”

Both teams hosted Arlington Catholic on Tuesday (past deadline) in a non-league affair. Tomorrow, the squads will host DCL foe Wayland in a 4 p.m. contest. It promises to be an exciting afternoon of racing between two of the stronger swim programs in Massachusetts. There will be a $5 admission fee charged at the meet, with all money collected going to Toys for Tots in the name of the Weston and Wayland High School Swimming and Diving programs.
