The Sports Watch for April 11 - 16

The Fastest Three Minutes in Weston Sports.

It's Sunday, and you know what that means. It's time for the Sports Watch, the fastest three minutes in Weston Sports coming your way right now:

Well, scoring runs in bunches in the first three innings, the host Weston softball team opened the season with a stunning 18-11 win over non-league foe Mount St. Joseph Academy.

The Wildcats scored four runs in the first, and six each in the second and third frames, before tacking on two more in the fifth.

Sophomore pitcher Ariana Vasquez helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4, including a solo home run to left center that soared over Weston’s new fence to lead off the third inning.

“First home run on our field with the fence,” marveled Weston head coach Kelly Harrington.

Senior captain and leadoff hitter Sarah Ober went 4-for-7, while junior centerfielder Sami Gosman, and sophomores Sarah Goldman and Dani Silverstein had two hits apiece.

Vasquez got the win in the circle, throwing all seven innings, and striking out eight along the way.

Freshman standout Talia Cramer, meanwhile, made her varsity debut with six assists and two put outs at second base.

In the following game, beneath sun-splashed skies on a gorgeous afternoon, everything was just as perfect for the Wildcats for six innings against visiting Waltham. Then, kaboom, the Hawks rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to wipe out Weston’s four-run cushion, en route to a 6-5 win over the Wildcats in Dual County League action.

“It was a great game for us offensively and defensively for six complete innings,” Harrington said, after her squad fell to 1-1 on the young season. “We ran into some defensive trouble in the top of the seventh and were unable to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.”

Weston got another tremendous offensive outing from Vasquez, who went 3-for-4, while also pitching a gem for her second complete game of the season. Vasquez (1-1) surrendered only five hits and one earned run, while striking out six and walking three.

The ‘Cats led, 1-0, after two frames, before Waltham tied it in the third. Weston then broke loose for three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Tanner Skenderian, who finished 1-for-2 on the afternoon.

The Wildcats tacked on another run in the sixth, before Waltham rallied for the win.

Ober, Cramer, and senior catcher Jessilee Gross also contributed one hit apiece for the 'Cats.

Weston will visit Dual County League rival Lincoln-Sudbury on Wednesday.

And you can make it two in a row for the high-flying Weston High baseball team. The Wildcats (2-0) continued to bat the ball around, this time to the tune of 10-1 victory over non-league host Austin Preparatory School.

“We are very pleased with where we are at this point in the year,” Weston head coach Jon Berry said. “But the kids know we still have areas to improve, and we will be back at work [today] trying to get better.”

Weston broke a 1-1 game in the fifth inning when senior Vinny Nardone walked with the bases loaded. The Marroon and White then struck for eight more runs in the sixth. The ‘Cats rallied with six hits and took advantage of two walks, two errors, and two hit batsmen.

Nardone finished the day 1-for-2 with three RBIs, while junior Gage Hartman went 2-for-4, driving in two runs. Seniors Nick Neu and Robert Charpie also had two hits in four tries. Neu drove in a run, and Charpie ripped a double.

Charpie also proved strong on the mound again, earning his second victory of the campaign. The right-hander combined with sophomore James Goulart for the win, as the duo scattered only five hits between them.

“Robert really competed on the mound today and pitched very well,” Berry said. “[Then] James came in and threw strikes and the defense was solid behind both of them.”
