The Sports Watch for May 2 - 7

The Fastest Three Minutes in Weston Sports.

It's Sunday, and you know what that means. It's time for the Sports Watch, the fastest three minutes in Weston Sports coming your way right now:

Well, first thing's first, Happy Mother's Day everyone. We start with the incredible early to mid-season run in which the Weston boys’ lacrosse team has gone 9-1, including this week's 12-3 win over visiting Newton South, that has sealed a spot for the Wildcats in the Division 3 North state tourney.

“We continue to have great team chemistry and the kids are really coachable and care about each other, which is key to our success,” said Weston head coach Jim Wilcon, whose squad stands at 4-1 in the Dual County League Small Division.

In  the victory over the Lions, Weston again was clicking on all cylinders. Senior captain and forward Kyle Nickerson led the ‘Cats with four goals, three of which came in the first half, as Weston shot out to an 8-1 advantage.

“We played pretty well today,” Wilcon said. “We had a few turnovers early, but had a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. We got better ball movement as the game went on and opened up the lead to 8-1.”

Sophomore forward Geoff Ziobro had a hat trick in the second half. Fellow sophomore and midfielder Matt Knight also played a strong game with a goal and three assists.

Wilcon also lauded the play of this squad’s tenacious defense.

“Our defense did an outstanding job limiting their offense to three goals and shutting down their two best players,” the coach said.

The junior contingent of Steve Iodice, Matt Atkins, Rob Bennett, and goalie Jared Fong led Weston’s dynamic “D,” and was supported by fellow defenders Harrison Fontaine, Nick Colangelo, Greg Lanzillo, and Nick Preacher.

We go to the courts, and after Westford Academy dispatched Concord-Carlisle last week, Weston boys tennis head coach George Conlin figured he would have a tough match on his hands.

But No. 1 singles player Will Spector set the tone early as the undefeated host Wildcats upended the Grey Ghosts, 4-1.

The Dual County All-Star senior remained unbeaten on the season and blanked Brendan Holman 6-0, 6-0 and Rutendo Matingo followed up with a relatively easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Kevin Chen in No. 2 singles.

The defending D3 state champs did not run into much trouble until Jason Mazella struggled in his first set against Victor Braescu in No. 3 singles, but the senior refocused in the second set to cruise 6-4, 6-0 as Weston improved to 4-0 on the season.

“Sure, it was a tough third (singles) set, but Jason poured it on,” said Conlin.“First doubles was a little slow and we just haven’t figured out second doubles yet.”

In doubles, Matt Gorelick and Max Legocki defeated Jamison Bigham and Corey Hu 6-3, 6-1 while Trevor Sands and Ben Spector dropped the only match for the Wildcats in a 4-6, 2-6 loss to Chris Alto and John Lawson in No.2 doubles as Westford Academy avoided the complete sweep.

To the diamond we go, and the Weston High softball team will try to shake off a 9-2 loss to visiting Westford Academy.

“[We] had the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and were unable to score, [and] threatened in the third, fourth, and fifth and were unable to score,” said Weston head coach Kelly Harrington, whose squad fell to 3-4.

The Grey Ghosts, meanwhile, scored a run in the first inning, before breaking the game open with five in the fourth. They added two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

The Wildcats mustered only five hits to Westford’s 12, while making five errors to the Grey Ghosts’ one.

Weston senior shortstop Sarah Ober went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while junior Sami Gosman and sophomores Ariana Vasquez and Sarah Goldman (double) had one hit apiece.

Finally, the Weston boys' track team finished in eighth place with 24 points and the Weston girls finished 15th with 12.5 points at the recent Mass State Track Association Division 4 Relays at Bishop Fenwick High.

The boys had only three relay teams score points but they made them count with a first place finish in the 1600 Sprint Medley, a second place finish in the high jump, and a third place finish in the long jump. The 4 x 400 relay team had to scratch which was unfortunate since it would have placed fourth if it had matched its qualifying time.

Junior newcomer Kyle Kachadurian took home a gold, silver, and bronze medal as a member of all three scoring relays.  Kachadurian competed in the high jump, long jump, and ran in one of the 200 meter legs in the sprint medley relay. Junior Tim Grant competed in the high jump and ran the other 200 meter leg in the sprint medley relay. Sophomore Craig Shytle also competed in the long jump and high jump.  Junior Spencer Shea competed in the long jump and had to scratch from the running events due to an injury. Senior Nicky Pack, who ran the 400 meter, and sophomore Geoffrey Pendergast, who ran the 800, were the bookends on the gold medal 1600 sprint medley relay, which finished in a time of 3:45.60.

The Weston girls' track team had four relay teams score points with a fifth relay team just missing the scoring ranks with a seventh place finish. The top scoring relay team was the 4 x 1600 meter group of juniors Alexandra Rigobon and Charlotte Walmsley, and sophomores Edom Wessenyeleh and Abigail Pohl, which finished second  to Hamilton-Wenham in a time of 22:37.08. The triple jump relay team of junior Lily Teplow sophomore Catherine Cebulla, and freshman Fini Bichara finished in fifth. Also finishing fifth was the high jump relay team of Cebulla, junior Julia Kee, and Bichara. Kee, seniors Emeila Barron and Haley Knapp, and sophomore Kayla Lawrence finished in sixth place in the 4 x 200 meter relay with a time of 1:55.37. Finishing seventh and almost placing was the 4 x 100 meter relay team of Barron, Bichara, Lawrence, and Kee with a time of 53.89.
