Top Weston Patch Sports Stories for 2011

It was another big year for Weston sports, with several teams winning state or division championships and many others showing strong finishes. Here's a look (in no particular order) of some of the year's highlights.

1. Feb. 11

After a fabulous finish to the regular season, the Weston Girls' and Boys' Swimming and Diving programs had a strong start to the championship season with a varsity record in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Weston girls' track team sparkled with an eighth place finish out of 39 teams at the Division 4 State Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center, with sophomore Abigail Pohl and junior Olivia Brackett the big winners for the Wildcats, crossing first and second, respectively, in the one-mile run.

Finding the right balance of offense and defense, the Weston High School boys' lacrosse team clinched its first-ever state championship, defeating Dover-Sherborn, 5-4, in the East Div. 3 final at Harvard Stadium.

4. , June 17

The Weston boys' tennis team won its second consecutive state title with a 5-0 win over Sutton in the Division 3 Final yesterday. The Wildcats finished the campaign with a 22-0 record.

5. , June 4

The Wayland-Weston crew team extended its six-year streak at the State Championships, again bringing home trophies for girls, boys and overall. 

6. , Sept. 7

After an almost 20-year departure, Watertown native Mike McGrath has made his way back to Weston High, after recently being appointed as the school’s athletic director. McGrath was the Wildcats’ head baseball coach from 1991-1993.

8. , Nov. 30

At their final meet of the season, the Weston girls' cross country team came within one point of qualifying for Nationals.

9. , Nov. 6

With a three-goal advantage 13 minutes into the second half, the Watertown High School boys' soccer team appeared in firm control of its Div. 3 North Sectional preliminary match against Weston. Though Weston would tally two scores in six minutes, Watertown prevented the equalizer and captured the contest 3-2.

10. , June 22

Weston's Kevin Eapen and Jack Barry won their respective leagues Most Valuable Player Awards after leading their teams to Little League championship titles. The Red Sox of the AAA League also won their championship.
