Waltham Rally Clouds Weston's Otherwise Perfect Day

Hawks score five in the seventh to swipe victory from the 'Cats.

Beneath sun-splashed skies on a gorgeous afternoon, everything was just as perfect for the Weston High softball team for six innings against visiting Waltham yesterday. Then, kaboom, the Hawks rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to wipe out Weston’s four-run cushion, en route to a 6-5 win over the Wildcats in Dual County League action.

“It was a great game for us offensively and defensively for six complete innings,” Weston head coach Kelly Harrington said, after her squad fell to 1-1 on the young season. “We ran into some defensive trouble in the top of the seventh and were unable to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.”

Weston got another tremendous offensive outing from sophomore star Ariana Vasquez, who went 3-for-4, while also pitching a gem for her second complete game of the season. Vasquez (1-1) surrendered only five hits and one earned run, while striking out six and walking three.

The ‘Cats led, 1-0, after two frames, before Waltham tied it in the third. Weston then broke loose for three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by junior Tanner Skenderian, who finished 1-for-2 on the afternoon.

The Wildcats tacked on another run in the sixth, before Waltham rallied for the win.
