Weston Boys Lax Suffers Narrow OT Loss to North Reading, 7-6

North Reading knocked off Weston in a thrilling overtime victory.

North Reading took control of the pace early on, and held on for a thrilling 7-6 overtime win over Weston High School in the Division 3 East semifinal June 7.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, taking a 4-2 at the half. Weston did itself no favors by turning the ball over 11 times before halftime. The stifling Hornet defense held the Wildcats to just two shots on goal in the first half.

The Hornets led 6-3 midway through the third quarter before the Weston offense ignited and took the game over. Senior Joey Pasquale had three goals for Weston, and junior Geoff Ziobro had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats had a quality chance in overtime, but the shot clanged off the post and set up North Reading’s final possession.

Cam Knight dodged right, ran around the net, and slid the ball low past Weston goalkeeper Jared Fong to propel North Reading to the 7-6 overtime win.

North Reading coach Chuck Campobasso said that it was the biggest win in program history, while Weston coach Jim Wilcon gave his players their due in the narrow loss.

“Give North Reading credit; they made more plays than we did tonight," Wilcon said. “It’s tough to fight back against a good team, but give my guys credit for battling back.

“We had a great, great year this year. This senior class has been unbelievable. They’ve put this program on the map. I love my kids and they are great players.”

North Reading will play either Hanover or perennial power Dover-Sherborn Wednesday night at Harvard.

“Really at this point it’s about fine-tuning some things and going from there,” Campobasso said. “We have to be able to score more goals; make good transitions. We just need to fix our things.
