Weston Finishes Perfect Season With A Light Victory

With a post season in the bag, the Wildcats defeated Wayland 3-2 at home.

With a week full of games over, a postseason berth grabbed and a perfect season in the bag, Weston boys' tennis team was due for some rest and relaxation on Friday.

Facing a Wayland team who had already missed the playoffs, the host Wildcats were given a chance to work in some future starters and give their present starters a break in a 3-2 victory.

The win finishes a 17-0 regular season for Weston.

“We are looking at what future is in store for us next season and give some guys play time,” said Weston coach George Conlin. “It was a good fun match today.”

Coming off 3-2 victory over Wellesley (14-2) the following day, the Wildcats sat all but their No. 1 doubles team Matt Gorelik and Matt Legocki and doubles partner Trevor Sands. Weston still managed to grab a victory by winning first and second singles along with second doubles.

“(Gorelik and Legocki) wanted to get sharp for the tournament and play another match before it starts next week,”said Weston coach George Conlin.

“It was good for our players to build confidence, because they are still young,” added Wayland coach Phillip Odipo.

Wildcat Trevor Sands defeated Josh Oneil 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while teammate Ben Spector bested Carter Paul 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Weston doubles partners Harry Teplow and Joe Wagner beat Matt Ayanan and Graham Mellon 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2.

“We were looking to play loose and out because a lot of times we play nervous,” said Weston assistant coach Cole Maholwitz. “Mixing up the matches allowed them to just hit out.”

Wayland doubles partners Ethan Hecker and Jon Goodman overcame Weston starters Matt Gorelik and Matt Legocki, 6-4, 6-4 at No.1. In the Warriors' other match victory, Jared Trollberg defeated Alex Mogart 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.

“Mainly we won from the errors made on the other side,” said Maholwitz. “The opponents were a little inconsistent, but we were consistent non the less.”

The match finishes the season for both teams with Weston advancing to the postseason. The Wildcats will have to wait till next Wednesday for their playoff seeding.

“We are looking to keep the undefeated season rolling,” said Conlin. “We had some great victories this year and grabbed close matches throughout.”

As based of its roster against Wellesley, Weston's playoff roster should be as follows.

Singles: Will Spector at No. 1, Rutendo Motergo at No. 2, and Jason Mazzella at No. 3.

Doubles: Matt Gorelik and Matt Logocki at No. 1 and Trevor Sands and Kar Epker at No.2.
