Wildcats Field Hockey Wins In A Rout

Weston beats Newton South, 9-1.

Exhibiting a full range of depth, the Weston High School field hockey team trounced Dual County League-foe Newton South, 9-1, Tuesday afternoon.

“It was a great team win,” said Wildcats coach Laura Galopim. “Everybody got playing time. We had eight different scorers out of nine goals, so it is nice to see the versatility of the team.”

The lone multi-goal scorer was freshman sensation Elizabeth Dennehy, who with her pair of tallies increased her team-leading total to 16.

“She’s just a playmaker,” said Galopim. “She can feed the ball as well. She plays the post position in corners where she’s able to score a lot of goals. She’s a very poised player.”

The Wildcats, who have already secured the DCL (Small) title, improve to 14-1-2 with the victory. The Lions, meanwhile, remain winless at 0-14.

“This is the hardest game we have played as individuals and as a team,” said Lions coach Kathleen Marucci. “We worked really well together. We scored and that’s been really hard for us. So it was really good for us that we got something in.”

Ally Gosman put the Wildcats on the board early as she stole the ball from a Lion defender and scored at the 25th-minute mark. Gosman reversed roles for Weston’s second tally when she passed to Vanessa Panagakos, who scored with 13 minutes remaining in the half. Less than a minute later, Dennehy notched her first of the game.

The Wildcats emerged from halftime holding a 5-0 lead, but the Lions applied offensive pressure to begin the second portion of the contest. That finally paid off when Jon Stricker brought the ball towards net, passed to Jordi Batler, who relayed it to Gail Wohz. She immediately capitalized scoring at 18:46.

But Weston responded moments later with Sara Coburn netting a tally, dashing any Newton South hopes of a comeback. From there, the Wildcats cruised to the victory.
