ASU's Asia Night: Friday, March 16

For $12 spectators can enjoy badminton, club presentations and an Asian buffet dinner to benefit the Asian Student Union at WHS.

In the days before spring sports start back up for the high school students at Weston, after-school schedules have remained booked with several events held by various clubs that are capitalizing on this newly ‘freed’ time.

Between bake sales, campus clean-ups and dodgeball tournaments, it can be hard to keep track of all that is going on at WHS. But one event after school today is one you should make sure you don’t miss!

The Asian Student Union at the high school (ASU) is known for its annual event, “Asia Night,” which in the past has been filled with spectaculars of all nature. I have attended this event and been marveled by martial art demonstrations, komodo fashion shows, and even rock bands consisting of students born in Asian countries. In addition to this entertainment, Asia Night hosted a hearty and delicious buffet dinner featuring dishes from all different Asian cultures. My favorite was the bubble tea!

This year, however, ASU will be taking their annual fundraiser in a new direction. I spoke with my classmate, Noah Norbash, for more information on tonight’s festivities. He is an executive council member of the club so his responsibilities include planning various events like tonight’s Asia Night.

Starting at 3:30 there will be the second annual ASU badminton tournament in the WHS gym. Several teams have already registered, and spectator prices are $5 at the door. Immediately following the shenanigans in the gymnasium will be a large exhibit in the cafeteria featuring demonstrations and advertisements from various groups and organizations around the high school. 5:30 is “when the booth excitement will start,” adds Norbash. “This year, we have several tables set up wherein other clubs can peddle wares like cake, drinks, henna, bookmarks and other goodies."

Each club involved will be showing more about its school and world-wide involvement and some of the clubs participating include the Muslim Student Assosiation, Amnesty International, Project Uganda and Best Buddies. In addition, “the ASU will sell tickets for $1 apiece that will qualify as payment to the booth vendors.” While visitors take in the information about what the students are up to and what each group involved has to offer, the food will be coming out! It wouldn’t be a proper Asia Night without a buffet dinner! “you may notice that we are fond of edibles in our proud club.” Beginning at 6 p.m. the ASU members will begin serving the scrumptious, all-you-can-eat Asian buffet. It’s unbelievably good!

ASU is the largest student organization at Weston High School. Througout the year the club holds “several hot pot events as well as dim sum outings,” though Asia Night is their most famout event. Students are welcomed from all types of nationalities and encouraged to come learn and share about the Asian culture. The Norbash twins are Iranian, “and let’s not forget Iran is still a part of Asia,” Noah adds jokingly.

The event closes at 8:30 but for one ticket price of $12 at the door (and $8 for children), students can enjoy the five hour spectacular!

Please come and support ASU! “It only comes once a year so enjoy it while it lasts!”
