The Wildcat Wall: What's It To You?

The existence of the Wildcat Wall in the Weston High School has seen better days. Don't hesitate to submit your work and share with your classmates something about you!

Last year, I set out on a mission. I wanted somehow, in a subtle way, to make a difference in my school community by bellowing out the good and biting back at the bad.

With the increased cases of bullying popping up across America, including the tragedy in South Hadley, Mass. and the hazing scandal with the Needham soccer team, schools and law officials saw the immediate need for resolution and eventual dismissal of all bullying in adolescents. Being a captain of sports teams at the school I am obligated to sign an agreement to prevent hazing in the program, an agreement easily fulfilled.

Even Taylor Swift strategically debuted her chart-topping hit “Mean” to push the issue along with the popular “No Love” by rappers Eminem and Lil Wayne last year when the cause was brought to light.

At Weston High School I more or less tried for the same effect.

Working with the student council and our principal Anthony Parker all last year, I launched the "Wildcat Wall” as a new and intriguing way to attack this bullying issue as well as promote WHS unity.

The Wildcat Wall is basically a forum built by students for students. Its content is completely open to the imaginations of the students and acts as a useful tool to learn more about the all-too-often hidden side of the kids we call our classmates. It can be a poem, a drawing, a painting or even a math-class doodle. This forum, of course, does not go without review so all content must be appropriate.

But unfortunately, in its second year, the whole ‘content’ part is lacking.

What has happened to the voice of Weston High School? It is scared to silence? I highly doubt that. Is it embarrassed to be heard? I hope not. Or is it just completely submerged in tests and essays? This could be true.

Whatever the reason, I wish it wasn’t so. The Wildcat Wall was designed to be an incredible source of inspiration, understanding and connectivity that students had at the tips of their fingers (or eye-level as they scurry off to class). Please, Weston High School! Let it be that once again! Bring it back to life, not for me, but for you! How are you--Resilient, Engaged? How do you show integrity and responsibility? We are Weston High School, let’s show it with pride and creativity!
