WHS Baseball Alumni Game is Memorial Day

Weston Baseball Alumni Game: Monday May 28, 2012, 5 p.m. at Weston High School. All are welcome!

Every Memorial Day, there is something more to look forward to than a day off from work. The tight-knit baseball community in Weston gathers back together every Memorial Day for a fun-filled alumni game. The first alumni game was held in 2007, when the dugouts were finally finished and there was a dedication ceremony for them. My brother was a senior then, and now, for the fourth year in a row, he’ll be joining his other brothers on the same alumni team.

Teams for the alumni game are split up by even and odd years of graduation. And the combination of both groups of guys makes it one of my favorite days of the year. Seriously.

The dugouts were dedicated in honor of Thomas E. Skenderian. Each year, supporters of Tom and the Youth Baseball Fund in his name come out to the alumni game to see the dugouts being used by the generations that missed the years to use them in high school.

The game starts at 5 p.m., but there is optional batting practice at 3 for the players. Those who want to play can register online (see below) and they all receive t-shirts and hats for playing. This year will be the first time it’ll be played at night, using the newly installed lights at the baseball field. Everyone is welcome to the game to watch the alumni play and enjoy the BBQ that will be cooking all evening.

Besides all playing on the same team, (“the odds”), my brothers all have worked toward planning this event over the years, handing over the responsibilities down the line, one by one. The two (of the three) brothers who are pulling together the 2012 Alumni Game are Tucker and Tyler. They would be happy to answer any of your questions.

It’ll be a great day for the entire community! I hope to see you there if you are playing or just coming to watch the years of baseball players come together for 9 great innings.
