Weston's 9/11 Ceremony [VIDEO]

Gather at the town green this year to remember those who died 10 years ago.

This year, as residents have done for 9 years, Weston residents can come to the town green to remember those who died in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The tribute, which was the idea of Weston Recreation Department director Doug MacDougall, began on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks and has stood for two weeks each September since 2002.

"It just struck me as something that needed to be done and for them to be remembered. What would be something that would get people's attention? And I thought 3,000 flags on a town green would be impressive," MacDougall said to Patch last year.

Anyone interested in helping to plant flags should gather at the town green on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m.

This year, in addition to the flags, there will be an interfaith ceremony run by the Weston Clergy Association at 12:15 p.m.

According to a press release sent out by the town, the ceremony will be led by representatives from Jewish, Christian and Muslim denominations, and will begin with the ringing of the Paul Revere bell from the First Parish tower. This will be followed by bagpipes and an honor guard, as well as readings from the three traditions.

"9/11 is still very much an open wound in our country," said the Rev. Dr. Thomas Wintle, one of the organizers, "and it is important on this tenth anniversary to remember and grieve, but also thank those who protect us and to hope for a more peaceful future."

If it rains, the ceremony will be held at the First Parish Church.
