Noted naturalist Russ Cohen, the son of long-time Trustee Lee Cohen, will lead the first Weston Forest & Trail Association walk of the 2013-14 season and will share with us his extensive knowledge of edible plants and berries at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at College Pond Conservation Area (park at Burchard Park off Concord Road).
Weston is home to more than 75 species of edible wild plants, many of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts, and at least a dozen of species of delicious wild mushrooms.
Pending favorable weather conditions, a number of edible wild mushroom species may be encountered as well. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, along with information on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods, along with guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.
Russ will also bring a foraged goodie or two to share at the tailgate party afterward.
