Beware of Scams During Year-End Charitable Giving

Taxpayers have until midnight Dec. 31 to donate to their favorite non-profits. However, make sure you know who actually gets your money.

  Non-profit organizations hold a very unique status in society. Unlike corporations, non-profits can avoid payment of federal income tax–and in most cases state tax — if they organize and operate to promote certain causes, which include "charitable, religious, educational," among others. Now, with only days left in the 2012 tax year, many non-profits will make last minute requests for donations because donors also receive a tax benefit — they can deduct the value of the money or property made to the organization. However, donors unfamiliar with the work of an organization should first conduct a little research to ensure that their money goes to the right place and for the IRS approved use. Weston Ranks Within Top 35 Zip Codes for Charitable Giving

The Chronicle of Philanthropy published charitable giving statistics by community today.

Citizens of Weston give to charity at a rate which puts the small section of town among the top 35 charitable communities in the country. The 02483 zip code ranks 31 of 28,725 communities with $115.3 million in total contributions for all income levels, according to figures released by The Chronicle of Philanthropy today. The study, titled “How America Gives,” breaks down each United States community’s charitable giving efforts to include the percentage of income given, average contribution dollar amount, median discretionary income and a variety of other factors by zip code. The Chronicle considers all donations claimed by taxpayers making $50,000 or more per year.
