After months of campaigning we now know who is going head-to-head in the June 25 special U.S. Senate election. Democratic Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) took the Democratic vote in the Tuesday election over fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston). Political newcomer and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset came out on top of a field of Republican candidates - including more seasoned opponents former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and State Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. With a month-and-a-half of campaigning still to come, we wanted to stop and ask: if the special election was held today - who would you vote for right now? Markey or Gomez? The final results from Tuesday's special state primary show that most Weston voters agreed with the majority of voters across the state.
Tuesday's special state primary brought 1,547 Weston voters to the polls across the town's four precincts, and the majority the voters who came out put their support behind the men who carried the Democratic and Republican votes across the state. According to the final Weston numbers, Edward J. Markey (D-Malden) garnered 854 Weston votes. Markey's opponent, Stephen F. Lynch, earned just 179 votes across Weston's four precincts. While far fewer voters cast Republican ballots, those who did put their support behind Gabriel Gomez. In Weston, Gomez earned 331 votes. His opponents, Michael J. Sullivan and Daniel B. A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. As debate schedules are set and signatures collected, campaigns are in full swing.
A lot happened this past week in the race for U.S. Senate, as we count down the weeks to the April 30 primary: As of Wednesday, two Democrats and three Republicans filed the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate: All five submitted more than the required number of signatures to the Secretary of State’s office to appear on the April 30 primary ballot. City and town clerks have until Monday to deliver all signatures. The five are all vying for the seat left vacant by ex-Sen. John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State. While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page showed up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. Congressman Ed Markey, who represents Weston, sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday calling for a new assault weapons ban and improved background checks, among other measures.
Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to the vice president Wednesday with proposed recommendations for his task force on guns. In the letter (attached), the Malden Democrat asks Joe Biden to consider recommending "a new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds.” He also asks the vice president to consider “a ban on ‘drums’ or ‘magazines’ of ammunition that can carry more than 10 bullets, which were used to deadly effect in both the Newtown and Aurora kilings.” “These are weapons designed for war – not for hunting or protecting one’s home – and have no purpose except to kill as many people as possible without the need to reload,” Markey wrote.
