Solar Array Informational Meetings, Site Walks Scheduled

The Weston Solar Photovoltaic Panels Exploratory Committee is hosting a number of site walks and informational sessions leading up to the May 13 Annual Town Meeting.

Voters at Weston's Annual Town Meeting will have the opportunity to vote on a possible renewable energy source for the town. According to an announcement from the Solar Photovoltaic Panels Exploratory Committee, Article 39 is asking for the authority to lease the closed landfill over a long period to a developer. The electricity generated would be renewable energy equal to 20 percent of the demand from the Town’s municipal and schools. The Town would buy the energy at a lower price than available on the electrical grid, saving $85,000 the first year, and $2.3 million over a 20-year contract. The article does not call for any capital project funds, nor would it impact the town's bond rating, according to the announcement. Leading up to …

How Can We Make Every Day Earth Day? (Sponsored)

Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.

Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because of …

Weston Celebrates Arbor Day with Soldier's Field Tree Planting

The Weston Tree Advisory Group, Weston Garden Club and others came together to plant six new trees at Soldier's Field.

A beautiful Friday morning found a small crowd of Weston officials and volunteers gathered at Soldier's Field for the town's 11th Annual Arbor Day Celebration. This year, the Weston Garden Club came together to collect funds for a number of plantings around town, including six new trees in the grassy field at the corner of Boston Post Road and Concord Road. Steven Schertzer works as a Weston Transfer Station attendant throughout the year, but for each of the past seven years, he's spent one day putting in trees as part of the Arbor Day planting. He was on-hand Friday for the ceremony and reading of the town's Arbor Day proclamation as signed by the town's Board of Selectmen. "... whereas through the cooperation of all residents and …

On the Hunt for Lady Slippers

The Weston Conservation Commission is seeking volunteers for the town's first lady slipper census.

The Weston Conservation Commission provided the press release below. This May, the Weston Conservation Commission will be conducting our first town wide lady’s slipper census.  We are planning to monitor lady’s slippers on conservation land because this favorite New England spring wildflower is, unfortunately, also a deer favorite for lunch. Lady’s slippers can provide a sensitive barometer of deer browse in our woodlands. Members of Weston’s garden clubs will be helping us collect data, and all residents are invited to participate by reporting lady’s slipper sightings. Lady’s slippers (like all orchids) are protected from picking by a Massachusetts state law passed in 1935. Fine: $5. Many of us can remember that they had become quite …

Every Day is Earth Day: Plant the Seeds, Inspire Children

Encourage children to love the earth and all will bloom naturally. Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism in Weston.

April 22 was Earth Day, which is celebrated across the entire world. But what can we do to show our love of the earth every day, on Earth Day and beyond? Love begins in the home and so does the love for our earth. If you teach your children to respect the earth on every level, they will continue to realize the global impact of environmentalism when they become adults. This is important for the sustainability of life as we know it.   Perhaps we can set off that spark in a child, making them want to learn more about the process and do more to help. If we've done our part, they might strive to become an environmentalist—professionally or at heart. Inspire children, plant the seeds early on, and they will flourish.  We all strive to do "acts …

Residents Invited to Friday Arbor Day Celebration

The Weston Tree Advisory Group will hold a ceremony celebrating Arbor Day on Friday, April 26.

Weston's Tree Advisory Group will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday and the community is invited to participate. Arbor Day "is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees," according to Wikipedia. In Weston, that means the planting of a few new trees at Soldier's Field, which is located at the intersection of Boston Post Road and Concord Road. According to an announcement, the Tree Advisory Group will be at Soldier's Field Friday at 10 a.m. to plant two white flowering redbud trees, one yellowwood tree and three American elm trees. The event is part of Weston's Tree City USA activities, according to the announcement.

Weekly Question: Is Weston a Green Community?

Earth Day is coming in April, so we're curious whether you think Weston is a green place to live.

Weston prides itself on its natural landscapes, open space and carefully respected trees and wildlife. It's the kind of place where "going green" seems a given. But is it? As you interact with your neighbors, utilize and observe town services and otherwise go about your daily life in Weston, is your impression that the community is environmentally friendly? Is Weston a green community or do we have a ways to go in that area? Let us know what you think in the comments. Make suggestions for ways that Weston could be more green or share ways that your family is investing in green living.
